The objective of BRAC's Reading Glasses for Improved Livelihoods (RGIL) program is to improve economic and social outcomes for low-income individuals by correcting presbyopia (age-related near vision loss) through affordable reading glasses. The program trains Community Health Workers to provide basic eye tests, distribute reading glasses, and refer patients with more serious conditions to the health system, thereby enhancing livelihoods and productivity while preserving specialist eye care resources
The expected outcomes of BRAC's RGIL program are improved quality of life and economic productivity for individuals with presbyopia (age-related blurry vision) through access to affordable reading glasses, empowerment of Community Health Workers (CHWs), and a strengthened eye care system that directs complex cases to specialists. Key results include increased earnings for beneficiaries, longer working years, and a larger pool of trained individuals capable of addressing basic vision needs at the community level.
